CAPTAIN Walter Musona scores from the spot as Scottland rescued a point from their MatchDay 2 clash with Ngezi Platinum at Rufaro Stadium. Veteran Farai Madhanhanga thrust Ngezi into the lead, early in the second period before Musona levelled matters in an otherwise high-tempo and entertaining. The much-anticipated fixture started off as a fast-paced affair, both sides playing an identical passing game making it show of ball control and retention. Scottland attempted to break the deadlock six minutes on, but an alert Ngezi goalkeeper Darlington Murasiranwa parried the effort away.In the 14th minute, the visitors appeared to have gotten their moment when Gomezgani Chirwa got a turnover from Tymon Machope, placed it well to Nisbert Muzenda before captain Qadr Amini blew the chance overbar.Ten minutes later, ex-Ngezi goalkeeper Nelson Chadya had to save Scottland after the miners breached their last man. After thwarting Ngezi, Chadya launched an attack that saw Panashe Mutimbanyoka break from the centre before Muzenda swiftly swept it out of his feet to go on a counter raid.Mutimbanyoka then found himself in a one-on-one situation with Murasiranwa on the half hour but a poor finishing decision saw his effort being blocked by Murasiranwa.Five minutes later Praise Machengete and Muzenda ganged up on Knowledge Musona in a foul that won the Warriors star a free kick just outside the box before his set-piece effort missed the top near post. Ngezi feeling comfortable on the ball came back once again swept smart through the midfield calmly building up until they got to Chadya, but their attempt to breach him were futile.Despite their second draw in as many league games, Scottland coach Norman Mapeza was impressed by his side, noting that it is still a work in progress.“We controlled the game in many moments especially in the first half, come second half, we conceded early in a goal that I believe could have been avoided,” said Mapeza.“The message became to keep pushing and I am impressed because we then got that penalty, it is a point in the bag.” For Ngezi coach Kumbirai Mutiwekuziwa the draw felt like “it was two points dropped’’. Ngezi now sit on four points out of a possible six while Scottland have two.“In the first half we were not as good, the hosts dominated us, but still we held on and come second half we got an early goal which was exactly our game plan,” said Mutiwekuziwa.“I feel that it’s two points dropped for us but generally I am impressed that our project is taking shape despite having to build under difficult circumstances of a FIFA transfer ban.”*Article originally appeared in The Herald*
